Back to Vironos. Turn right to Lisikratous street and after 15 meters at the beginning of Adrianou street.  At the square of Agia Ekaterini church many taxis drivers park illegally during evening hours and wait their lovely tourist customers. Some of them exploit foreigners ignorance . So be careful.  Only at the near Syntagma square Taxi drivers park legally  under permanent police presence. Try the metro instead of taxis. It is clean, consistent , secure and much faster. Metro as a rule starts about 5:30 AM and closes after midnight. During Fridays and Saturdays nights its timetable extends at 2 AM for discouraging drunk drivers.

Adrianou street is the backbone of touristic Athens. No tall new buildings, no excessive use of cement. Buildings for various reasons are remained unchanged from the ‘60s uncontrolled reconstruction of Athens. Until 1970 Adrianou street was undervalued and a few people bothered to upgrade it. After 1980 with the strong intervention of culture minister and actress Melina Merkouri the street and the Area around it began to be developed. Old houses are prevented by law to be demolished or renovated without permission. Many tasteful new owners  have spent fortunes to renovate some of them. Traces of the old decadence can still be found.  Nowadays Adrianou is considered one of the most expensive streets to live. Prominent and healthy greeks have bought houses or apartments around Adrianou street. Those with a view to Acropolis are impossible to be bought without pulling strings. Browse at the touristic shops which serve every need a visitor have. Don’t search for bargains here. You will be later disappointed. It’s a safe street at all times. The shops in Adrianou, like in the whole area of my Athens Walk, have tourist operating hours. That means, especially during high season, that most of them are opened from 8 AM the morning to 3 AM the night. The presence of tourist and municipal police is constant. Many illegal street vendors sell every fake item you can imagine. They appear and disappear instantly. If you simple show no interest they won’t be persistent. Video

2nd Route 1st Deviation.

From Adrianou street you may deviate to Kidathinaion street. Now you dive into the heart of Athens, the Plaka area. Plaka is the oldest builded area  in post Ottoman Athens. It has 106 building blocks. Its street layout has remained unchanged for centuries. Most buildings dates from 19th century. They are called neoclassic.  You will see many beautiful old houses. Around Kidathinaion street you will find many good old respectable restaurants. Spent your night in (by night) taverns of  the Chatzimichali street. Eat mousaka , pastitsio, souvlaki or fried cod fish. Video

Back to Adrianou. There are bakeries, mini markets, bank ATMs, and cheap food to go. Video No cafeterias exist in this part of Adrianou.  Walk until you reach a tight five way intersection . Video

2nd Route 2nd Deviation.

At the tight five way intersection if you are not run out of steam continue the  Adrianou street at the left. This part is not pedestrianized but in peak times it is so crowed that you can walk safely in the middle of it. Video That street like every street in Athenian historical center is lighted by special lanterns. To the local residents the low lighting may seem romantic but for first time visitors seem a little bit unsafe. Video Do not worry all the streets are crowed and the  shops keep the lighting up. You will find jewelry shops, tapestry shops, memorabilia shops and  the Agoras square. Agoras square has peaceful  cafeterias serving also food. Video Customers can enjoy their beverage under the trees of square. It is a cool choice for resting during the hot days of summers. Further at the right are the ruins of Hadrian's Library and the left upwards, the Roman Agora. In these archeological areas there are a lot to see . Pay a visit. Video

Kidathinaion means the honor of athenians. Kidos is the honor in ancient greek.

2nd Route 1st Deviation Kidathinaion street Athens.

There is two theories about the Plaka name. The first is that between the streets Kidathinaion, Adrianou and Tripodon there was a huge white slab ( slab is plaka in greek). The second is that it is an Arvanitic word ( Arvanitic derive from the albanian language).

During the Ottoman rule, Athens was scarcely populated due to epidemics or forced deportation of the natives by the ottomans for various reasons. After the end of 16th century the Ottomans gradually in Attica and Athens motivated the settlement of Arvanites from the Albanic region.

2nd Route 1st Deviation Kidathinaion street Athens  Right Filomousis etairias square also well know as Plaka square.

In Athens Arvanites were named by ottomans as Gagaroi. A name that it still used today for the old Athenias.

So the name Plaka is possible to derives from the arvanitic word “Pliakou” ( “Ancient” or “old” in arvanitic) because of the many ancient remnants.
