Many photos of vandalized, burned and destroyed buildings and shops during the riots that occurred on December 2008 in Athens.

On 6th December 2008 the 15 year old schoolboy Alexandros Grigoropoulos celebrated his name day with his friend in Exarcheia district of Athens. At the same time in the same district some groups of young men engaged with the police.  Exarcheia is a district that anarchists, antiauthoritarian groups and leftish extremists clash regularly with the police for decades.Grigoropoulos happened to meet a policeman who for reasons that are not cleared yet shoot him dead.

Soon afterwards , mass media spread the news. Immediately serious clashes occurred in Exarcheia. As it is usual for the district, some cars were burned and several shop windows were smashed. Grigoropoulos wasn’t the typical youngster who had troubles with the police. He descended from a wealthy family and studied in one of the most prominent private school of Greece. His murder mobilized all the school students and young adults.

The next day the first demonstrations began at the center of Athens.  The authorities and the police as they admitted much later, didn’t realized soon enough the severity of the situation. Their fist approach was to typically  ignore the problem and avoid the provocations. Nevertheless the next night of the murder the troubles spread to the whole center of Athens. In areas of Athens that were always peaceful began the vandalization of buildings, the looting and burning of shops. Many miserable immigrants joined the usual trouble makers and seized the chance to revenge for their misery. The second morning many shop owners faced the destruction of their stock and shop windows. The center of Athens was paralyzed by demonstrations against the murder. Police was overzealous  and reacted with massive use of teargas and firecrackers. Inside the peaceful demonstrators extremist infiltrated and molotov cocktails started to fly. The clashes between police and demonstrators accelerated. The peculiarity of the situation was that police was facing unconventional rioters. They were not at all organized, they didn’t know each other, they were full off anger and not only for the murder. They didn’t act in trouble prone regions like Exarcheia .Also in late 2008 the first signs  of the economic crises began to appear. Adding to that ,many  years of no immigration policy let hundreds of thousands of desperate immigrants to misery. The murder was a pretext for the revenge .

The third night everything was out of control. The police wasn’t expecting the usual suspects at the usual places. Peaceful  commercial and touristic districts and roads like Plaka, Monastitaki, Syntagma, Amalias street, Alexandras street etc , had many incidents. A great number of shops were completely burned and looted. The rage of looters reached even Kolonaki , something unprecedented . Kolonaki is an aristocratic district with luxury shops and heavy police protections. Police was surprised off the simultaneous many different points off riots in Athens. The riots took place only the nights under the cover of darkness.

The period of the riots was the Christmas period. Every December greeks before the economic crisis took double salary. The riots and demonstrations had a devastated effect to the sales of all the shops in the center of Athens. Some years before, riots occurred in Paris too , but not in the center of Paris. Byers were afraid to go downtown for shopping. The riots was the begging of the end for thousands of shops in Athens.

Just before Christmas the police under huge public pressure was ordered to stop being reluctant and tolerant. Reinforcement came and rioters were chased vigorously. After a few days everything calmed down in Athens.

A few years afterwards new evidence appeared about the case of the Alexandros Grigoropoulos’s saw the light. The friend with whom Alexandros celebrate his name day in Exarcheia was caught by the police. Nikos Romanos was present at the Alexis’s murder. Greek police claims that he was connected with the terrorist group “ Conspiracy of the Cells of Fire “ .
